Rattlesnake
Wilderness celebrates 25th year By PERRY BACKUS of the
Missoulian
The celebration of the 25th anniversary of
Missoula's own backyard wilderness area - the Rattlesnake - will get
started this weekend with a hike to Boulder Lake to help restore
some camping sites.
But don't despair if you've already made
plans.

|
| There will be plenty of other opportunities to
join in the celebration. For the next five weeks, the Lolo National
Forest and others are planning a series of hikes, bike tours, work
parties and discussions into and about the Rattlesnake national
recreation and wilderness areas.
Congress officially
designated the area on Oct. 19, 1980.
"Having the Rattlesnake
National Recreation and Wilderness right in our backyard makes
Missoula a very special place," said Maggie Pittman, the Lolo
National Forest's Missoula district ranger. "It helps define who we
are. We want to celebrate this special place and its special
anniversary, and give something back to the Rattlesnake."
The
celebration's anniversary theme is "Give Back to the
Land."
Events scheduled include:
- Saturday: Volunteer to help restore lakeshore campsites at
Boulder Lake. Volunteers will travel and work alongside a Forest
Service wilderness ranger. They'll meet at 7 a.m. at the Missoula
Ranger District at Fort Missoula, Building 24, where
transportation will be provided to the trailhead.
- Sunday: Volunteer to help restore a national recreation area
trail with a Forest Service mountain bike ranger. Volunteers will
meet at 10 a.m. the main Rattlesnake trailhead.
For both
events, participants should bring gloves, water, lunch and boots.
To volunteer, call the Missoula Ranger District at
329-3814.
- Saturday, Sept. 24: Hike to Stuart Peak and into the
wilderness with Cass Chinske. Meet at 9 a.m. at the main
Rattlesnake trailhead. Remember lunch, water and rain
gear.
- Saturday, Oct. 1: Learn about the settlement history in the
Rattlesnake drainage with Daniel Comer. Meet at 10 a.m. at the
main Rattlesnake trailhead, and bring water, lunch and rain
gear.
- Saturday, Oct. 8: Tour the national recreation area by
mountain bike with a Forest Service mountain bike ranger. Meet at
10 a.m. at the main Rattlesnake trailhead.
- Saturday, Oct. 15: Talk and walk with bear biologists Chuck
and Jamie Jonkel in the national recreation area. Meeting time and
location is still being determined.
- The celebration will conclude with an evening barbecue at the
Rattlesnake Gardens on Wednesday, Oct. 19, the same day the
Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness Act of 1980
was signed. Rattlesnake Gardens is located at 2501 Rattlesnake
Drive.
Former U.S. Rep. Pat Williams, one of the
sponsors of the legislation, is helping plan the anniversary
celebration.
"Our Rattlesnake Wilderness and Recreation Area
is the best backyard in America," he said. "The bill designating
this soaring, sparkling place seemed to move through Congress in
record time, largely because of outstanding citizen involvement and
support."
The bill was introduced on Aug. 26, 1980, and
signed into law on Oct. 19, 1980.
Congress officially
designated 61,000 acres in the Rattlesnake drainage to foster
watershed, recreation, wildlife and education. The national
recreation area contains 28,000 acres, and 33,000 acres are
protected as wilderness.
The Rattlesnake drainage is also a
municipal watershed for the city of Missoula.
"We are so
lucky to have this wonderful area right next door," said Pittman.
"Located only four miles from downtown, the Rattlesnake brings us
together for a weekend hike, a short stroll with friends or a nice
winter ski outing. It's just a part of our
community."
